'Great Ocean', a 1985 Adams 12, has only had two owners since new and is now exclusively for sale with the YOTI team in Tasmania.
These superb blue water yachts were originally designed as racer-cruisers by master yacht designer Joe Adams. They are a fast cruiser and unlike more modern designs do not have a bad wind angle. They go just as well upwind as down wind.
'Great Oceans' hull and deck was built by the famous Trewartha boat yard in 1983 and then meticulously fitted out by the original owner over 2 years in Sydney before being launched in 1985. The hull is in perfect condition with no osmosis and has been slipped annually (last October 2020).
The original owner was highly skilled in fibreglass and designed and built the hard dodger that gives 'Great Ocean' it's beautiful distinctive look. Fitted hard dodgers are notorious for looking like add ons which is certainly not the case with this boat. The vessel has bulwarks rather than a traditional toe rail which also adds to the appeal of look of the boat and increases the freeboard.
'Great Ocean' has had significant upgrades in the past 12 months with the Yanmar 20hp engine completely rebuilt in the workshop by Hughes Marine in Kettering and she comfortably motors above 6 knots with it's easily driven hull shape. All the standing rigging was recently replaced by Almasts ready for another 10 years. All the rope clutches in the cockpit were also replaced and winches serviced.
Designed as cutter rigs, the option to run a (furling) staysail is a significant benefit for anyone looking for a true offshore safe, fast cruiser. The low windage design (which Joe was famous for) has a fin keel and all important skeg hung rudder which gives the boat superb control in heavy weather without broaching.
The layout is very user friendly with the centre cockpit design providing a huge rear double cabin plus a large forward V berth. The large centre cockpit with its hard dodger protection makes for very dry sailing in rough conditions.
It has eutectic refrigeration and Diesel heater which also provides hot water. There is plenty of storage throughout the boat. The Muir anchor winch can be operated forward or in the cockpit.
This is a very capable capable offshore cruiser for the price point and will appeal to those who understand good yacht design and looking for a fast seaworthy boat that will look after them when venturing offshore.
