Nautilus Yacht Management is very excited to offer ‘Bob the Cat,’ to the market. The Bahia 46 is one of Fountaine Pajot’s most legendary catamarans ever produced and well known by serious sailors for its passage making abilities. Chosen for her speed, stability and ease of handling, this blue-water cruiser has safely and stylishly carried her owners - lifelong sailors/racers - halfway across the globe, with their two young children.
The Bahia 46 has earned her reputation through her sailing capabilities and is a great performer. She has a generous sail plan and, with her foam core upper hull sections and decks, she is light for a cruising catamaran of her size at 9700kg. With a high bridge deck clearance, low centre of gravity and aerodynamic profile, sea keeping is excellent and provides a fast, comfortable ride even in rough sea states. On passage, 200 nm days are easily possible with a high level of comfort aboard.
Fin keels provide good windward performance while keeping the draft at only 1.3m. It is safe and easy to dry the boat with a moderate tide for inspection or underwater maintenance.
The helm is centrally located in the cockpit, a position that enables safe watch keeping, efficient communication between the skipper and crew, and an excellent view of the sails. The high quality North Sails are in excellent condition and were installed in the Caribbean five years ago. The fully battened mainsail, with 4 reefing points and furling Genoa, are easy to manage by a short handed crew and most sail controls are fed back to the cockpit. There are 4 large winches on the coachroof as well as a stern winch dedicated to the operation of the traveler which can also be used to assist in raising the tender.
The massive cockpit offers ample space for sailing or entertaining and provides a large safe enclosed area while underway. Decks are open, spacious and free of clutter, making it an ideal area for children to play or to accommodate lots of guests on a day sail. Wide steps at the transoms make great platforms for swimming, fishing or launching kitesurfing gear. The large exterior table can seat 10 people and can be folded down to less than half the size to create more space in the cockpit when needed. The huge wet locker under the cockpit floor provides ample storage for jerry cans, extra ropes, water sports gear or any other outside equipment.
The visibility from inside the boat is outstanding, allowing a short handed crew to keep an effective watch while attending to navigation, cooking or other indoor tasks. The saloon is well laid out with a huge dining table that can seat 10 people. With kids on board, the owners have also found this to be a great set up for schooling, projects and family games nights. Adjacent is the large galley with good ventilation, a view to the horizon, and its own designated floorspace so the cook can prepare meals in comfort and peace without interference from other crew members moving around inside the boat. There is generous counter and storage space, a massive dual fridge (and large 12V deep freezer located in the port hull), double sinks with both freshwater and saltwater taps, a stovetop and oven.
Accommodation is spacious and comfortable with 4 large ensuite double cabins and two additional single berths in the middle of each hull. With more than enough sleeping space available, the owners have converted one of the single berths to a storage area with shelving that can be easily removed and flat packed, if needed. One of the heads in this same hull has been converted to a laundry room with an automatic washing machine (which can also be reverted to factory layout if desired). There are also two far forward areas, originally intended as additional crew berths, that make ideal storage spaces.
This Bahia 46 was entirely re-powered in New Zealand in 2017 with brand new Yanmar engines and sail-drives complete with a set of Gori folding propellors. The new propellors have improved sailing performance by adding up to a knot of speed! And when the wind disappears, the new engines are powerful enough to move this catamaran along at 6.5 knots or more. The engines are now broken in, the 1,000-hour service was just recently completed, and they are still in warranty. This re-power upgrade was a USD $45,000 installation and will provide many years of reliable service to come.
The yacht was hauled out in January 2020 for cleaning and new antifouling. All underwater components were inspected and serviced including removal of rudders and replacement of rudder bearings. An insurance survey was also completed, giving the boat a clean bill of health (available upon inquiry).
We bought Bob The Cat in the Caribbean at the end of 2014. With our two children, who were then just 4 and 6, we sailed to New Zealand via Panama, Galapagos and the South Pacific. After 2 years in New Zealand, we sailed north to Fiji then continued westwards to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and through the Torres Strait to Indonesia. After extensive exploration of Indonesia, we continued north to Malaysia and Thailand for the final leg of our adventure. Sadly this journey is over for us, as we return to work and school. So we are reluctantly selling our boat to continue its travels with new owners.
We chose the Bahia 46 as a good balance between sailing performance, space and affordability. Certain key design elements such as the generous bridge deck clearance and enclosed cockpit were important to maximize sailing comfort and safety, especially with children. We also loved the clean smooth lines and deck layout which not only look great but make it a very safe boat to play on. We were not disappointed, and enjoyed the lively and fast sailing performance, allowing fast passage times while always feeling safe. The boat is genuinely fun to sail, both downwind and upwind, which is not something we always hear from owners of other cruising catamarans.
One of the other key design elements that we like is that the helm station, sail controls, saloon and galley are all in close proximity. For long distance passage making this is ideal as no-one is isolated away from the rest of the crew while on watch, cooking or doing other things inside. The helm is safely protected within the cockpit area and behind the main cabin which is appreciated in foul weather.
The 4 large double cabins gave our family of 4 a ridiculous amount of space and we ended up using one cabin as a work area and washroom with the addition of a washing machine. We could also give an entire hull to visiting family and friends.
The electrical and mechanical systems are sensible, simple and accessible. The few times we have had to replace or repair things, it has been easy, even in some remote places.
Bob the Cat is a nice, clean and very well equipped example of the sought after Bahia 46 and the only one available in the Asian market. The owners have priced the vessel competitively for an expedited sale. In sail-away condition and equipped to New Zealand Category 1 standards (one of the worlds most stringent offshore codes) this yacht is prepared to take you anywhere in the world. This Bahia 46 is now available for immediate handover, in the duty/tax free port of Langkawi, Malaysia. All New Zealand import taxes are paid, so there would be no additional costs for a New Zealand resident wanting to take her home.

Underwater sections of both hulls were stripped back to the original gelcoat. Hulls were inspected for osmosis, had an epoxy barrier coat applied, and were newly primed and anti-fouled.
Complete re-power with brand new Yanmar 3JH5E engines. New SD60 sail-drives replaced the old SD50 units, and new Gori two blade folding props were installed. The fuel system, including the primary diesel tank, was completely replaced, and the engine compartments stripped back and all insulation completely replaced.
