Extensive refit in preparation for her 2016 sail from Turkey to the Caribbean.
Mary Lou has been fully imported in Australia, with tax paid.
Hans and Mandy, Mary Lou's owners had already accumulated a vast experience of ocean sailing, with 5 years cruising around the world with their young children, when two decades later, they saw the opportunity to go cruising again. They set to work finding the perfect craft, a catamaran, which was the obvious choice for safety, comfort, ease of handling for the just the two of them, and of course with plenty of room to welcome their visiting children and grand children along the way.
Having set their heart on a Leopard, chosen for its second-to-none reputation as an ocean-cruising catamaran, very strong hull and quality of the fit-out, they set about searching for the ideal one. After considering a few Leopards in the Caribbean, which they found mostly worn out by excessive use and prematurely aged by their tropical surroundings, they travelled to Eastern Mediterranean where they found Mary Lou, a Leopard 384 and immediately purchased her.
Like her Caribbean sisters, Mary Lou had started her life as a charter yacht, yet she looked far-younger than the vessels her owners had seen so far. The reason for this was that she was in the water only 5 to 6 months per year, spending the flat season on the hardstand, a practice adopted by charter companies in this part of the world, and which effectively reduces the ageing of these yachts by 50%. When compared to ex-charter yachts, such as in the Caribbean or the Pacific, which are true working horses, constantly in and out of harbour for 11 months of the year, the pretty Mary Lou was a very attractive choice, especially for a couple preparing to sail half way around the world!
Another reason for her younger look was the difference in weather, and particularly humidity. If a tropical environment is heaven for humans, it is unfortunately not at all the case for marine craft, where hot and humid conditions combined with an incessantly beating sun considerably ages a fibreglass yacht. May Lou had no mould anywhere, no softening timber, her gel-coat was un-blemished, and after a thorough inspection, she was found to be sound all over.
However, as a charter vessel, Mary Lou was quite bare. She had to be transformed into a safe, thoroughly equipped passage-maker for her new life as a world traveller.
Her new owners, with the help of a Yacht Management Company in Turkey, spent in-excess of $60,000 having the boat made ready for the trip, fine combing the ship and making sure that any item found ageing was replaced, and that an extensive list of items to ensure the safety of her owners at sea was added. After departing Turkey in 2016, Mary Lou happily cruised the Med to Gibraltar, then down the coast of Africa to the Cape Verde Islands via the Canaries, across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, then through the Panama Canal and up to Costa Rica. It was there that her owners had to make the decision to either sail to the BVI and remain there, or ship their baby home as the season was already too late to attempt the crossing on their own bottom. (It was a decision which proved to be incredibly fortunate, as the marina in Tortola where the yacht was supposed to have taken residence has since been ravaged by Cyclone Irma).
Lucky little Mary Lou arrived in Newcastle in September 2017, and has spent the past few days being thoroughly spoilt by an army of marine specialists. She was inspected by an independent marine surveyor to assess if any damage had been done during the cruise or her time on the ship (the survey report is available on request). She has been anti fouled, and was given a full polish, wax and a thorough detail inside and out, revealing her unblemished gelcoat and immaculate interior. Wishing to present the yacht in the pristine condition that she deserves, Hans ad Mandy have asked a local trimmer to replace the saloon upholstery where it had suffered some wear and tear. (The photos of the saloon show the old upholstery, which is in the process of being replaced). The floor, which is remarkably scratch-free, is gleaming. The beautiful teak trimmings and cabinetry are also in perfect condition. The fantastic stainless-steel extra-large two-draw fridge-freezer looks brand new, as does the galley, with its beautiful Corian counter top, huge storage cabinets and appliances.
The cabins are all perfectly clean, free of dust and smell, as are the two generously proportioned head areas with large separate shower cubicle. The windows and hatches are in very good condition for their age, and there are absolutely no leak anywhere. A new mosquito screen / sliding blind has been ordered to replace one that has recently broken (another example of how perfectly Mary Lou's owners wish to present their yacht).
On deck, the trampoline is undamaged and is only a couple of years old. There is no rust marks, pitting, cracking or damage in the gelcoat. The running rigging is tidily organised and the standing rigging has been inspected for damage. The cockpit, storage lockers, anchor locker, etc, are all immaculate as well. The engine rooms are perfectly clean.
The sails, lazy bag, lazy jacks and deck fittings are all in good condition, having clearly been used appropriately and kept polished when necessary. The davits are very substantial, and look as new. The dinghy, kept aloft, is well used but serviceable. A 1-year-old Yamaha four stroke outboard is kept conveniently stowed on its custom transom plate and beneath its protective cover.
Both engines, reliable Yanmars, are still relatively low in hours when compared to other ex-charter yachts and under 3000 hours. The good thing about their past working life is the regularity with which they have always been serviced, as well as benefitting from a thorough flush-down between seasons. They have always worked perfectly and have continued to be religiously maintained by Hans and Mandy.

The Sunsail 384
The Sunsail 384 is the newest generation of cruising catamarans, focusing on performance and comfort. With an abundance of outdoor space and its generous sail plan, this catamaran is a market leader yet highly practical and easy-to-use. The spacious four double cabin, two head layout gives plenty of room for groups or families. Generous headroom throughout plus substantial storage capacity as a result of under-bunk lockers in each cabin gives even more space for on board relaxation.
The exterior of the Sunsail 384 is equally well thought out, with a large cockpit hardtop providing excellent shade and weather protection and a powerboat-style stepped transom enabling easier boarding. Environmental considerations were also central to the design, with solar panels installed on the helm hardtop to charge the on board batteries.
Built exclusively for Sunsail by Robertson and Caine, the new Sunsail 384 is the newest generation of cruising catamarans, focusing on performance and comfort, offering an abundance of outdoor space to capitalise on sailing in the warm breezes of the tropics or Mediterranean.
This brand new design results from a close collaboration between Sunsail, Robertson and Caine, and Morrelli & Melvin (designers of high performance cats such as PlayStation and the world record setting Cheyenne catamaran), and features ‘edgy’ Euro styling and a generous sail plan for a perfect combination of performance and fun on the water!
The Sunsail 384 features a large cockpit with an outside dining area and versatile ergonomic seating for up to eight guests. A functional hard-top bimini protects the cockpit area and helm station, where all the main sail controls are located for hassle-free manoeuvres, even with a limited crew.
Powerboat-style open transoms really make boarding easy. Other neat features include a top-notch anchoring system with electric windlass, a convenient dinghy davit with electric winch, and twin 30Hp diesel engines for good motoring performance.
The galley-up design incorporates a spacious saloon area and aft-facing galley with a serving window overlooking the adjoining cockpit area. Large vertical windows forward provide excellent shade and rain protection, and allowed the designers to maximize interior volume in the saloon area, with headroom of 1.95m/6ft 5in throughout.
Accommodations include four double cabins and two forepeak berths, great for kids or additional storage, and two large heads with dedicated shower compartments.

Installing an extra 300 watts of solar panels (3 panels @ 100 watts each) to make a total of 440 watts and a new 1200 watt inverter (Victron Phoenix).
We installed a Victron MPPT Battery Charge Regulator to control our solar panel charging.
Bought a 60m floating dock line to tie back to land
Replaced the existing light globes with LEDs, inside and out including the anchor light and the red/green lights on the bow. Not the stern light.
We installed a through hull fitting for a water maker but we saw no need to install it at that time. We have 1000L of water storage but should that have not be sufficient then we could install one easily. That was our thinking.
Replaced the mainsail halyard.
Polished the boat and cleaned, sanded and antifouled the hull. International Micron 10
In the course of the following months until now we have made further improvements.
Servicing the roller furler . Replaced the bearing in the top swivel and the bottom drum. We replaced the forestay with a new one and had the rigging checked and adjusted.
We purchase a second hand dinghy and a new 2.5 HP 4 stroke Yamaha
As our plan was to cross the Atlantic and explore the Caribbean, we added to our existing Raymarine instruments an AIS send and receive.
We added an Iridium Go for the weather and communications. We installed an outside antenna so the reception was good right out at sea.
We assembled a grab bag so should we ever need to abandon ship we would have a good survival kit ready to go.
We have spares for the boat.
In order to save power we installed 4 extra 12v charging points (makes 6 altogether) for charging phones etc. We installed power points under the salon table for using computers there.
In the Caribbean we hauled out and anti fouled again. We installed two new starter batteries for the engines. We replaced the port toilet pump.
