Few boats can match the X-Yachts Cruising range when it comes to finding everything you need to sail in safety and luxury anywhere in the world. Built for the high latitudes and some of the most trying oceans conditions you may encounter, they are also sleek and fast. The sail plan has been created specifically for long distance cruising.

The Xc 50 is also easily sailed short-handed, with under-deck halyards led aft to self-tailing winches (including electric primary winch already installed with all other winches pre-wired) and a secure central console.

At first glance, this magnificent vessel, which we first encountered docked at Whangarei Marina, revealed herself to be nothing short of a head-turner. Gleaming with her just-polished epoxy gelcoat and multitude of stainless steel deck fittings (even the anchor controls are stainless steel, as are all the winches..), reinforced glass wind shield, strong davits and top quality running rigging tidily coiled or invisible, quite simply looked like the ultimate luxury yacht.

However, this Xc 50 is not just beautiful to behold, she hides, beneath her graceful lines the strength and qualities of a very serious extreme explorer. This is for this reason that this French family with two young children decided on this model after years of research and experience as professional sailors. This was for many reasons the best boat for their planned journey, which took them from France to the antipodes over 27,000 nautical miles, across some of the wildest oceans of the world,  deep into the 40's and 50's latitudes, across the Atlantic, the windy canals of Patagonia, into the Pacific and across to New Zealand over a two year period.

One of the most interesting characteristics of the X-Cruising model is the reinforced structure of the boat, which is built around a heavy galvanised steel frame on which the keel is attached (unlike regular production boats which reply on simple backing plates for the keel bolts), and onto which the mast is installed and secured, as well as extended with lateral brackets to which the rigging screws are led to, effectively providing an immensely strong support for all the essential parts of the boat, namely the rigging, keel and mast.

'Gaia' is a heavier boat than regular production boats but this is what is needed for the type of exploration she is designed to do. She is heavier, but she is not slow. She will not surf, but you will not risk pitch-poling while surfing uncontrollably down the face of a wave. She has no bad habits. She doesn't slam. She combines all of the modern traits of a boat designed with luxury in mind, while still respecting some of the very important rules for stability, safety and durability on the ocean, which is unfortunately harder and harder to find in today's boat manufacturing. Unlike the X-p designs, which focus more on a lighter, coastal performance sailing boat, the X-p is really designed for conquering the far reaches of the world. The keel, sturdy and with a ballast ratio appropriate to cruising, is short enough at 2.35m  deep to allow you to tuck into lagoons, while her hull shape provides very good pointing ability and exceptional handling, which is further enhanced by her bow thruster should you need to manoeuvre into a tight marina berth.

Together this family experienced some adventures that few can dream about, and this boat, as she is now, fully quipped and ready to continue on her way, is your chance to inherit not just the outstanding design and building skills of the X-Yacht team, but also the numerous upgrades and little but significant modifications which the owners made to further improve the design around their need for a boat that could be single handed, controlled no matter what the weather Gods threw at them, anchored in some of the most trying terrain in the world, safe and comfortable for their family no matter where they were, independent and able to run for long periods in complete autonomy, equipped with everything you could possible need to step aboard today and make her your home, as well as drop the lines and sail anywhere in the world at a moment's notice.

For more info please check our Youtube Channel (Nautilus Yacht Management). We have made two videos of this beautiful boat: The Voyage of 'Gaia'. 27,000 nautical miles from France to New Zealand via Patagonia, which will give you an idea of the incredible journey they have just completed, and a second video which is more focused around the boat and her presentation as she is today, immaculate and waiting for you.

It is hard to believe that this extraordinary boat has so many miles beneath her keel and was the home of this family for over 2 years.. We simply could not fault her.

Located at Whangarei Marina, amongst other cruising families from the all over the world, 'Gaia' and her owners are on board and available with a little notice to meet you and show you through the boat.

Read on for the full description and for more information please contact our friendly team at Nautilus Yacht Management. We are cruising yacht specialists and take a lot of pride in bringing you such a beautiful yacht.

Our agency has helped buyers from all around the world purchase the boat of their dream, and a decade of working on an international platform has provided us with the knowledge to help you with all the steps of your purchase, import, delivery, registration etc. Purchasing a yacht overseas does not have to be stressful. We are here to help.

The Xcruising yachts provide a greater interior volume for accommodation, tanks and other essential cruising equipment.

A medium to heavy displacement and high keel weight guarantees maximum stability, however, Xc50 is responsive and rapid in all conditions.

The Xc 50 comply with European Union’s Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) to meet Design Category A – ‘Ocean’ and the requirements of ABS (American Bureau of Shipping).

All sail handling is controlled from the cockpit. Halyards, reefing and control lines are led back to the winches on the coach roof, whilst the German-style mainsheet is led to dedicated winches within easy reach of the helmsman. The mainsheet track has been moved out of the cockpit onto the coach roof which makes the cockpit safe for the children.

The stainless steel davits and the electrical hoisting bathing platform simplifies life on board.

The raft is either stored in a dedicated locker in the transom or placed on deck (hydrostatic release).

- Full sandwich construction, using foam core with biaxial E-glass skins and local uni- directional reinforcements.

- Solid, monolithic laminate is used in areas around the keel structure, rudder stock bearing, around each through hull fitting, sail drive, and thruster.

- Structural bulkheads of marine plywood. At the forward end of the boat watertight bulkheads separate the anchor compartment, sail locker and interior accommodation for safety and reassurance in the event of a collision.

Hot galvanised, high strength steel frame which forms an integral part of the hull structure. It is capable of absorbing loads from keel, mast and rig as well as shock loads in the event of grounding. The yard guarantees that the boat can hit a rock at its hull speed (8 kn) without undergoing structural damage.

Fitted with discontinuous rod, this standing rigging offer an exeptional stiffness to take advantage of a generous sail plan. The structure has an integrated single point centre hoist for easy and safe lifting and launching.

The deck is a hand lay-up, full sandwich construction mainly biaxial E-glass layers with local uni- directional and carbon fibre reinforcements. In load bearing areas, such as under deck fittings, either plywood or aluminium replaces the foam core.

All locker hinges, catches and fillers are flush with teak deck or GRP where appropriate.

A continuous stainless steel strip protects hull to deck joint, mounted on sheerline.

"We bought new Gaïa in Denmark, the country of the shipyard. We chose an X-Yachts because we wanted a sailboat that would perform well in light wind and upwind conditions (see polar), be reliable in rough weather and have a solid construction that would allow for error in the event of a grounding. The design of the Xc50 also offered us the comfort to satisfy children in the strong and chilly conditions.

We prepared the boat with the help of our experience of sailing in the North Sea in the English Channel and in the currents of North Brittany. By making the best use of our professional and personal skills, we have made the necessary modifications to make the boat more suitable for life on board and anchoring in difficult and extremely remote sailing areas.

  • 3 sets of ground tackle of 100m and more, two windlasses (one aft and one on the bow)

  • Heating, watermaker, hydrogen generator, generator set

  • Various facilities for everyday comfort: stove with thermostat and grill, insulation of the front coaming, wardrobe, shelf, etc. While scrupulously respecting the original design

  • Robust chainplates system on deck, usable on demand, to temporarily increase storage space (e. g. windsurfing, surfing, fuel canisters, etc.)

  • Complete and simple to use sail set: mainsail, cape sail, genoa, reefing solent, orc jib, asymmetrical spinnaker and gennaker.

From Brittany in France, she took us to New Zealand, via:

- The roaring forties and the screaming fifties of the South Atlantic

- The Canals of Patagonia

- And from the remote atolls of the South Pacific

From the very first edges in the tropics we were able to see the advantages of the hull's intrinsic insulation, its interior space, ventilated and bright, as well as those of the fittings made on deck... Subsequently, it was able to match this course off the beaten track. It allowed us to arrive at the antipodes of our departure place in complete safety after two years of titled rides between dolphins, whales, sea lions, gulls and sharks (27,000 NM).

After a good hull and deck polish, three good layers of antifouling and some minor work which we are completing, she is ready to go again."

Personal testimonies:

"This is the first of my floating houses with which I have such pleasant memories both in the calm lagoons of the Pacific and in the windy canals of Patagonia. A cozy and secure nest where I was able to raise my little ones..."

"Gaïa allows you to read and play a little bit everywhere: inside, outside, while sailing, at anchor or in the ports. It is comfortable even when parents are out in the wind. It's full of hiding places."

"The transom-door is too good to jump, dive, ride the paddle and even clean the fish caught by mom and dad. Its boom is wide enough for us to climb on. Gaïa is also great for playing inside and outside, just about anywhere. »

"It's probably the most elegant monohull we'll ever have. It is with great doubt that we will leave our "home". We owe this infidelity to another encounter, that of an extraordinary catamaran, the TS5. No need to try to compare these two yachts. What is certain is that if we could keep both, we would do so for the time to come!"
